The Velodyne sub is a more audiophile sub. It is a VERY tight sound and is VERY clean.

The DefTech is a little more geared to home theatre. Not quite as tight....a little, and I mean LITTLE, mushy.

I would personally choose the Velodyne in my system...as a matter of fact...I did! I have two HGS-10's in my audiophile system.

Good Luck and happy listening.
