Introduction:

This Testimonial comes to us from a wonderful man in Italy by the name of Luigi Ponzo. Added to his great enthusiasm for the best audio experience possible, Luigi is a gifted woodworker and electronics designer, designing and building much of his audio system himself.

Luigi contacted us in early February of 2008 for advice with his current dilemma.  He had built a large and beautiful dual band pass subwoofer.  This box is very well made, with two layers of 1" MDF everywhere and hand made, multi-section port flares that are built out of MDF and approximate an exponential flare.  Luigi uses a decent modeling program, and decided to install two European "High Performance" 18" Professional Audio drivers.  He was never quite satisfied with the sound, and finally burnt out both 18" drivers.

Luigi asked us for advice.  He knew the limitation for performance all along had been his 18" drivers.  Despite the good specs on paper, they did not perform adequately.  His lower box tuning is 16Hz, and the simulation of his box with two Acoupower 18" drivers was not very good.

We agreed.  The simulation of two 18" Acoupower drivers was not very promising.  Then a miracle happened.  We simply looked at the performance of his box with two Acoupower 15" drivers.  We studied this carefully from all angles.  Excursion, power handling, response shape, distortion.  The result was unbelievable.  It was as if Luigi had spent many hours designing this box originally for two Acoupower 15" drivers.  In fact we accused him of exactly that.  Faced with the results of the simulation, which he himself could verify and analyze, Luigi placed an order for two 15" Acoupower drivers immediately.  His heart began to race.  This was to be a system of uncompromising performance and incredible output capability.

As we like to say around here at Acoupower, you either get the idea of what our drivers can really do, or you don't.  Luigi "saw the light".

We had absolutely no doubt that our 15" drivers would outperform his previous 18" drivers in this application.  Neither did Luigi.  He went about making adaptor plates so that he could install our 15" drivers, and we got to making him a special version of our 15" driver- with velocity diffusers on the back of the motor structure.

Here is what Luigi wrote to us after installing the Acoupower 15" drivers. Also included are several photos and a video from Luigi as well as our simulated response of the box.  Luigi said he would be glad if we shared his email with others and even invited us to change his words and touch up his English.  We have decided against this.  His English is good enough, and we wanted nothing to detract from his excitement.  Here is his email to us, exactly as he wrote it.

Carlos,

It was not simple.
They were heavy to be mounted without an aid.
...but, in spite of all, at 2:30 a.m. I've finished mounting the drivers! It was very late but it was not admissible not to try the subwoofer.

Sure, I need to adjust levels crossover slopes and frequency, but I had to know if and how it works.

God Bless You Carlos, it sound tremendously well!

I tried with various pieces ranging from famous Bach organ works (Murray on some Telarc CDs) to soundtracks ( Epics, Fantastic Journey, Great Film Fantasies, Time Warp, Star Tracks, Star Tracks II, The Big Picture etc.. all from Telarc catalog), to some "pyrotechnic" Reference Recordings CD.

The result is simply unbelievable! You can push the amplifiers towards their limits while listening absolute clean basses. This greatly exceed the previous speakers performance!

The chandelier in the middle of the room ceiling was shaken so much that some lamps got unscrewed!

I was not sufficiently awake to judge if it was all ok, but when the window nearest to the subwoofer opened itself while I was playing "Also Sprach Zarathustra" that convinced me that it was time to go sleep!

Now I've only to solve a problem with the cabinet front panel gaskets that leak a bit, but this will be done in the weekend.

In the meantime I've to congratulate with you for your product.

It looks like a remarkable piece of mechanical engineering and sound like it looks!

During the weekend I will probably have spare time to test the cabinet more deeply: I'll be back to you soon to let you know!

Thank you for your patience and for the kind support Carlos,

Luigi
