How can i hook up a sub woofer to a DVD player?

Okay, so i have a Surround sound dvd player and a sub that didnt come with the dvd player. The dvd player has a port but its for the sub that came with the dvd player. Its like to stripped wires that you clasp in. and the sub just has a port. Could i use an AV jack to hook the two? or what do i need to do here?
How will i know which side is +/- ? And what is the appropriate cable?

Use the appropriate plug at the subwoofer end, and strip wire the speaker connection at the amp end, don’t see the problem,be sure to connect the wires with matching sides (-) (+).

if you can visibly see the speakers, you can check its polarity(+/-) by using a AA battery. a pop test as they call it..
