Are my neighbours allowed to install loudspeakers in their garden?

Our neighbours garden overlooks the front of our house. We have just noticed that they have fitted loudspeakers on their back wall. Looks like they’re planning some wild parties this summer 8-(
Are they allowed to have these?

to be honest, yes they can BUT, only in conjunction that they obey the rules of the law when it comes to loud music in a neighborhood. everyone is allowed to set up speakers in their yard, since its their property. you need to see it the other way around, you want to have a get together, and you of course, want to entertain. what would be one choice? music! but you would still need to keep it at a certain volume control. in Texas, the law states, "no loud speakers shall bear loud sounds or music past the hour of 12 midnight." *note that it says, LOUD, not off* they can have it on, but with the volume low enough where it wont bother you.
if you have gotten along with your neighbors, then i would suggest you talk to them and see if they can come to an agreement on just how loud and when they should set it up. take it nice and slow, don’t go in there blaring with a loud voice either. ask the local P.D. to see at what time does the music need to either be low or off. good luck in this matter.
just keep in mind, that they might invite you to their party’s too…..don’t screw it up. ha-ha

  1. Depends where you live… if it’s UK then yes they are allowed. If they do make a lot of noise you can make a noise complaint with the council, they are generally quite good with noise complaints, depends on where you live.

  2. Yes. They have them here in the states too. You can buy them in garden centers in some places.
Just try and be cool for now. If they get out of hand and way too loud, call the cops anonymously.

  3. well yes
its just the same as taking a radio into the garden, but just like in any other case if they start to make to much noise just ask them to turn it down.
if they wont then you can complain.

  4. There are rules relating to the playing of music, speech etc from properties. I would go along to your local council offices "Environment Dept." and there you will find out all you want to know and what you should do if your neighbour makes a disturbance

  5. yes they can. though it’s a different matter if more people will complain.

  6. Certainly, but what they do with them is another matter. Most communities have sound ordinances. Find out what they are. In my community people are not allowed to make a lot of noise after 11:00.

That’s the easy part. So if they make a lot of noise after 11:00 (or whatever the time is where you are), you have to decide if the noise level is high enough to make it worth acting on, and how you want to carry that out—whether you want to talk to them or if you want the authorities to get involved. Be careful. You can really make enemies here, and these are enemies you have to live next door to.

But don’t get all worked up about it yet. Maybe you’ll get lucky. My sister-in-law and her husband have outdoor speakers and they only use them for quiet background music when they have a few people over for dinner and a swim. You can easily talk over the music. I doubt that the neighbors hear it at all.

Here’s another thought: maybe you’ll be invited! :)

  7. Yes, they’re allowed to have them. Noise ordinances vary from place to place, but usually they can play what they like as long as it is quiet by 10 or 11 pm.
