How many amps come through my car cigarette lighter outlet?

I want to convert my cigarette lighter outlet to 110AC. I have a converter but I will need at least 15amps to run a small air compressor that I want to buy. My vehicle is a 2004 Nissan truck. How many amps would be available for this vehicle? Thanks

  1. …..the amperage to ur cigarette lighter is in milli amps…..so less than one….

that is what the power inverter does is step up the voltage and amps to accommodate the required output……..

power inverters are rated in wattage u need to look at that not ur cigarette lighter……

  2. Your cigarette lighter probably can supply 15A. Check the fuse. It’s probably a 20A fuse.
Is the small air compressor like a tire inflator? Or is it for a nail gun?

The power output from the lighter would be 15A * 12V = 180W.
Your converter is probably 80-85% efficient, so you could run a 150W load on your 110V converter. That works out to 1.36A at 110V, assuming a resistive load.

  3. most cigarette lighter outlets are connected to a 10 amp fuse. check your owners manual. If the air compressor is 110 volts and 15 amps then you will need a fairly large inverter(1650 watts) to produce the power to run it. A converter that big will require large cables connected directly to the battery. You need to find a good 12 volt compressor it will be a lot cheaper than the route you are taking now.

  4. The wiring in most cars is only rated at 8 amps continuous (10 amp fuse) for the Cigarette lighter socket.
