How to check if car amplifier is working?

I bought a pair of 12" subwoofers the other day, and the guy I bought them from gave me an amplifier with it for free. I need to know how to check if they are operational.
I want to do this BEFORE I install into my car.
I have already connected the positive to positive and the ground to the chassis.

bridge a power cable into the remote turn on terminal on the amp it should turn on although this does not guarantee its going to work
