the closer the better. you dont get distortion from the amp you get it from the speakers. anywhere will be fine i have my mounted onto my sub box and its great. as long as you got a good ground source then you will be fine
References :
I believe that if you have the amplifier closer then that's a lot better. If the wiring is shorter then the power goes quickly to the speakers, with better sound and volume. There will be no problems at all, it might even be better for the system. The grounds on each amp should be close so no matter what the object you're using in your car, I.E. amps, subs, speakers, headunit, then it doesn't matter how close they are together.
References :
Say it with me, "The Exclusive Company" WI

The rule of thumb for almost anything electrical is, the closer the better. The farther you get from the power source the more resistance you add to the circuit. Thus lowering the working wattage. In car audio this really doesn't come into play all that often.

Personally, I try not to run more than 5 feet of wire between the amp and the subs.
References :
My amp is right in front of my subs and not a problem. You shouldn't have any problems.
References :
well, i dont know exactly what kind of set up your gonna do,but Ive never heard of a problem occuring due to the amp being too close to a speaker.
