You design your system around the spl (sound pressure level). I mean in a well designed box, a single 12" with 500watts of power can be much louder then a poorly designed box with 4 12" and 500w apeice. I once saw a single 10" with 600watts blow out all 5 windows of a vw golf at the same time.... that is what a well designed system can do.
