What are the advantages of tube bass amps to a solid-state bass amps?

I’m about to buy a new Ampeg bass amplifier. The amp i’m interested in come in a sold-state version and tube version, and are almost the same cost. I play with a Fender V-Jazz Bass, if that makes a difference. What are the advantages and disadvantages of tube amps and solid-state amps?

Advantage of tube is sound quality, nothing more. You’d have to play them both together to see the difference but for bass I wouldn’t care so much - ampeg sound sweet anyway in both forms :)

Disadvantages however, Tube amps are waaaay heavier to carry, break more often and are expensive to fix. They take time to warm up properly (so you can’t plug and play instantly) and will often lose power in the tubes if you over power them which can screw gigs up. As must as I like the tone of tubes its a lot of hassle if you’re using it for typical uses such as gigging.

In a store how do they power the display models of car headunits, amps, speakers, and subs?

Do they use car batteries, PC Power supplies, or what do they use to power all of the car audio stuff in the store on display?

Power supplies. Batteries are a mess to maintain in doors. Power supplies are cheaper and require little or no maintenance.

How do you know that a sub-woofer is airtight.?

I made my own sub box and I placed the subwoofer in the box and sealed the box but I don’t know that my box is airtight. What happens is when I push the woofer down it takes about 2-4 secondes to restart it’s position. How do I know my box is airtight.

in terms of what you’re going to hear, being truly "air tight" is not critical. You just don’t want massive leaks at every joint. As a bit if insurance it is common practice to run a bead of caulk along all the interior joints to prevent any leaks so you might try that.
I even do it with ported boxes.

Car battery amps measurement for current leak?

Can I get step by step instructions on how to connect my amp meter to check for a current leak. I will need to pull out one fuse at a time to see if the current drops, but I am not sure of how to connect the amp meter. Do I remove the + cable but keep the - cable on the battery?

You can remove either the positive or the negative and keep the other one hooked up. You put your meter in line with the removed cable……….remove one cable end from the battery and then hook one meter lead up the the disconnected battery post and the other meter lead to the disconnected cable end. Have your meter on the highest amp setting so you dont blow the fuse inside your meter. You will need to wait a few min till the computers "sleep", some vehicles will have an excess draw for the first few min until the Computers shut down. also make sure you take out the light bulb for the hood if it has one and to keep the door shut while you are looking for the draw Good luck!

Where can I find the cheapest subwoofers and amps?

I am making a sculpture where I am going to use some subwoofers to make very loud, low frequency sounds (like under 60hz). I want to use about 6 subwoofers and will need three stereo amps or some sort of six channel amp. All I need are the raw speakers and amps. I will build the enclosures. What is the cheapest way to do this? Would it be hard to wire car stereo amps to run from wall outlet power?

Ebay has alot of cheaper equipment. As far as running car audio on ac power, you would need a battery charger hooked up to an actual car battery. Then you just hook it all up as you would in a car. Keep in mind that you will most likely need a head unit as well. although, You could get away with using rca connections from another source though. Make sure the amp has a low pass filter as well. good luck

would i need a separate amp to power a Klipsch RB-81 system?

I was thinking of getting a Klipsch RB-81 system in 5.1, and will be using for 90% movies/games and 10% music. I currently have the receiver only.

-Receiver Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXH
-Amp: Emotiva XPA-5
-Fronts: Klipsch RB-81
-Center: Klipsch RC-62
-Surround: Klipsch RS-62
-Sub: velodyne SPL-1200R

here is my question:
My receiver outputs 110w rms per channel but the speakers are 150w rms and have sensitivity of 97 db.

Will i be under powering or will a Emotiva XPA-5 amp @ 200w per channel be better?

Thanks!!!

They are not the interchangeable. The Emotiva is a Power amp, so you would also need a pre-amp/controller (or the Pioneer and bypass it’s power amp section).

That said, the Pioneer will work fine with the Klipsch speakers. The 150 watt rating for the RB-81 is power handling, not how much it takes to power them. Also with the high sensitivity (97dB) you don’t need a lot of power to get loud sound.

Finally, keep in mind that to increase loudness by 3 dB (barely noticeable) you have to double the power. So you are not talking about any significant difference in loudness even if you cranked the volume up all the way … which you won’t need to do.
